Setliff and Whitten Cruise into Semis at Regionals

CURRENT RESULTS

CLEVELAND, Ohio – It was a day of mixed results for Otterbein's lineup as a whole on Saturday to begin the NCAA Regionals, hosted at the Veale Center by Case Western Reserve.

The Cardinals had seven competitors endure elimination at the jam-packed event, but also a pair of veteran standouts in Ryan Whitten (157) and Jarrodd Setliff (197) roll into the semifinals after convincing results. Both have made the NCAA Championships in recent years and will have another chance to do so on Sunday with a top-three finish.

Everyone was forced to overcome an awkward and abrupt delay at one point after the fire alarm went off and the facility was cleared. After 20-30 minutes of waiting, the action resumed. Here's a rundown:

WHAT WENT DOWN:
  • 133 - Zach Orseno, competing in his first Regionals, endured a pair of decision losses to competitors from Mount St. Joseph and Alma.

  • 141 - Andrew Sas, also making his postseason debut as a freshman, lost a tough one to Trine's Jett Boots in the first round before coming up just shy in a 3-2 loss to Anthony Santagata (JCU) in the wrestleback. Sas drew even with an escape point to begin the third period, but a late takedown with just 16 seconds remaining proved to be the difference.

  • 149 – Nathan Leko split two matches before suffering elimination late in the day. He overcame a decision loss in the morning with a 7-5 victory over Luke Milanovich (OWU), securing three takedowns in the first period and holding on down the stretch. Unfortunately, his run came to a close against Isaac Hawkins (Trine) after the bout went into a third period locked 4-4.

  • 157 – Whitten, a former champion in this bracket as a freshman, cruised into the semifinals after consecutive pins. His first came in just 38 seconds before also ending Teagan Hendricks (ONU) very early in the second period. Another showdown with JCU standout Patrick McGraw is on deck for Sunday.

  • 165 – Senior Jacob Williams, lacing up in his final college matches, dropped a pair of matchups with counterparts from Adrian and Alma. His latter bout went into the third round before getting caught.

  • 174 – Newcomer Logan Cormell had a tough pill to swallow in his opener, going beyond the distance with Caiden Rodgers of JCU before a takedown in overtime for the Blue Streak resulted in sudden victory. Cormell then fell to John Browning (Trine) in the consolation ladder.

  • 184 – Kyle De Moss traded a loss/win before bowing out. He absorbed a decision loss to begin the day but responded with a nice 7-1 triumph in attempt to work back, recording two takedowns and a reversal along the way. His weekend closed in the next round.

  • 197 – Setliff, a reigning NCAA qualifier, began his effort to make a trip back with consecutive bonus-point victories. He pinned Aidan Belgiorno from Heidelberg within two minutes and then majored Ben DePrest (ONU). This sets up a critical showdown with another conference rival in top-seeded Doug Byrne from Baldwin Wallace in the semifinals.

  • 285 – Zac Stray bounced back from a tough opener to claim a narrow 2-0 decision in his next opportunity against a counterpart from Manchester, emerging on an escape point and riding time. He was then eliminated by Joe Maier (Alma), who found an early takedown and held on from there.
