WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein men's tennis team was forced to go the distance in a marathon match against Transylvania on Sunday, which lasted nearly five hours and saw the Cardinals finally emerge with a 5-4 triumph.
The victory pushes Otterbein to a 5-1 record this season ahead of the team's annual spring break trip to Orlando, as five matches currently loom March 5-10.
The Cards found themselves with a 2-1 lead after doubles against Transy, which claimed the top line by a count of 8-4. Recent OAC Player of the Week
Joshua Mammen and his partner, Jack McDivitt, secured an 8-5 decision on the next line down while the tandem of
Will Newberry and
Dylan Shook comfortably prevailed 8-2.
Brandon Wall shrugged off his doubles defeat to win No. 1 singles in straight sets, as did Newberry on the fifth court. Transy won on the second line as Chris Kaufmann held off Mammen in a very tight second frame, 7-5…
Courts 3-4-6 all saw extra points along the way.
Jamie Price would ultimately fall short after dropping a first-set breaker and the Pioneers snuck out victorious on the No. 6 line after Jared Wells outlastedÂ
Boban Mihajlov in a third-set breaker. Mihajlov, who won the opener 6-4, nearly won the match in two sets but Wells rallied to claim an 8-6 breaker.
McDivitt grinded his way to the critical point at third singles, overcoming a first-set loss to win the next two by counts o 6-3, 6-4.
Otterbein will now turn its attention to spring break where Hampden-Sydney, Wabash, Covenant, St. Francis (Ill.) and Ursinus wait as opponents.
