Otterbein Drops Tough Matchup at No. 14 Denison

RESULTS

GRANVILLE, Ohio - The Otterbein men's tennis team fell short against NCAC powerhouse and No. 14-ranked Denison University 9-0 Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals absorbed only their fourth loss of the season and still remain 9-4 overall as they head into the remaining calendar this spring.

The Cards took one last break from conference play to challenge Denison, but will now look to grow and work towards a strong finish against fellow OAC competitors.

Earlier this season the Cardinals had other North Coast Athletic Conference schools lined up in the form of Wooster and Wabash. Otterbein defeated the Fighting Scots (6-3) and was slated to take on Wabash College, but unfortunately had to cancel down in Florida as a result of bad weather.

Denison proved more difficult and controlled most courts, beginning with doubles victories by scores of 8-5, 8-0 and 8-1 respectively. Brandon Wall and Jamie Price put up a strong fight in the first doubles slot, but ultimately fell short by that 8-5 margin.

The Big Red then took all individual matches in straight sets. Jake McDivitt (third singles) rallied against his opponent to find a few key scoring opportunities and win some games, but ultimately fell b counts of 6-2, 6-3.

Denison, coming off a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Championships last year, has continued off that and improves to a 17-3 mark this year.  Those three losses have come to (formerly ranked) No. 1 University of Chicago, No. 8 Emory University and current No. 1 Case Western Reserve University.

Otterbein will continue league play this next week, hosting Marietta on Good Friday.
