FINAL RESULTS
OBERLIN, Ohio – The lengthy non-conference matchup lasted roughly four hours and, in the end, host Oberlin prevailed by a score of 7-2 despite some long rallies and extended sets.
The two sides, competing for the first time in a decade, competed admirably inside the Heisman Field House after nasty wind and cold temperatures forced the match indoors.
The Yeomen improve to 3-3 overall, having won three of their last four, while the Cardinals fall back to 2-3 this young season.
DOUBLES ACTION:
- Otterbein fell on lines one and two in the tandem showdowns, albeit Joshua Mammen and Jake Chilcote battling fairly in an 8-4 defeat.
Â
- Dylan Shook and Will Newberry went the full distance and then some to earn a point for the Cardinals at the No. 3 court. They rested on top (8-7) after a narrow 7-5 breaker.
SINGLES ACTION:
- Max Fickas went toe-to-toe with Oberlin ace Rohan Gold in a match that lasted multiple hours. The Belmont Abbey transfer showed nice fortitude after getting blanked in the opening set, responded mightily with a 7-5 victory to deadlock. Unfortunately, Gold escaped by the same (7-5) nail-biting score in the next frame.
Â
- Mammen also went a full three on the No. 2 line, where the Aussie won 6-3 to begin before dropping a 6-1 middle set. His counterpart, Shawn Lisann, strung together a 6-2 margin in the winner-take-all showdown.
Â
- Otterbein came up short on courts 3, 4 and 5 as Oberlin clinched the match, but that didn't mean gritty newcomer Nikita Kitaev was relenting in his contest… The Westerville South product navigated a three-course meal full of breadsticks in trading successive 6-1 scores with his counterpart. In the end, he registered the difference-making result to earn a second point for the Cards.
NEXT UP:
Otterbein will travel to play Franklin College (3/5) and Anderson University (3/6) on consecutive days in The Hoosier State over spring break.
