WESTERVILLE, Ohio – More dominance took place for both Otterbein tennis programs against cross-town rival Capital on a busy Friday morning/afternoon, as both teams cruised to 9-0 shutout victories throughout campus.
The Cardinals begin Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play on a high note while dropping the Comets back to 1-1 on each side as well, as the visitors had previously opened their league slate with victories over Marietta.
As a result of the sweep, both Otterbein teams also retain possession of The Oar.
The men's side featured seven straight-up wins and then two other courts by default, with
Joshua Mammen and
Will Newberry posting perfect 6-0, 6-0 shutouts in singles play.
Max Fickas and
Neil Reddy had a nice 8-2 triumph at first doubles, while Mammen partnered with
Jake Chilcote to rip off more of the same.
On the women's side,
Erin Storrer and Olivia Eckles worked a bit for their 8-4 decision atop the doubles portion in the morning. The other two Cardinal tandems in
Lillia Walter/
Aubrey McMahon and
Julia Gillin/
Rachelle Moses glided to W's.
Storrer breezed 6-0, 6-0 atop the singles lineup and all teammates did practically the same.
Cassady Shough had a perfect first set and nobody dropped more than a couple games, except McMahon who showed nice fortitude staying the course late in a second set with her opponent not willing to go home quietly.
The women's team was scheduled to host nationally-ranked Carnegie Mellon on Saturday, but that contest has now been postponed due to the weather forecast. Mount Union will eventually be the next conference opponent.
