FINAL RESULTS
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Otterbein Track & Field program was represented admirably on Friday at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships, where both competing Cardinals out-performed their seeds to make their names known on the national stage.
Sophomore
Peyton Proffitt, making yet another appearance in the women's pole vault, took third for the second year in a row to become a 3x All-American in the event. She cleared four-straight heights (on the first try) to begin the day before coming up short in the 12-8 (3.87 meters) range.
Proffitt, one of just five individuals in the field of 19 to soar over 12-6 ¼ (3.82 meters), edged out Leah Zastrow of Wisconsin-Stout and Emma Rudolph of Westminster for third due to less misses beforehand. She has now finished top five in all three NCAA showings during her young career.
Senior Madeline O'Connnell (Rochester) won the national crown with a height of 12-10 ¼.
Freshman
Richmond Honkpo, competing at NCAA's for the first time, also represented nicely in the long jump despite narrowly missing the podium. Ranked 16th coming in, he churned out 10th place competing out of the opening flight before waiting to see if he would make finals.
Honkpo flew 6.93 meters (22-9) during his opening jump and then achieved his best mark of 6.96 meters (22-10) on his third/final attempt of the day. It wasn't quite enough to advance after others shook out, with the top-eight individuals moving on to earn All-American status.
Joshua Rivers (UW-Oshkosh) won the national title with a mark of 7.58 meters (24-10 1/2).
Both standouts (and their teammates) will now turn their attention to a highly-anticipated outdoor season that begins next week, where a chunk of the team will travel to UNC Charlotte.
