Cards Display Fortitude in 6-3 Comeback at Baldwin Wallace

FINAL RESULTS

BEREA, Ohio – The Otterbein women's tennis group displayed nice fortitude on the road Saturday afternoon, erasing a slight deficit after doubles play to emerge with a 6-3 victory at Baldwin Wallace.

The Cardinals get back into the win column after a disappointing result during the mid-week clash at Ohio Northern, now standing a crisp 4-1 in OAC play.

Doubles action was very competitive with a swing match on the middle line. Prior to that, BW cruised at the No. 1 spot but Will Newberry and Dylan Shook snagged the Cards a point with a tough 8-6 triumph.

Joshua Mammen and Jake Chilcot went extra points with their counterparts on the second level, leading into a tiebreaker before the Yellow Jacket tandem escaped 7-3.

That adversity and deficit was short lived as Otterbein came roaring back to win five of six individual contests, albeit mostly difficult and well-earned showdowns.

Mammen was blanked in his opening set but rallied to win the next and then his breaker, 10-5. Chilcote (also needing a breaker) kept the momentum rolling at No. 3 singles while Reddy embraced a similar theme by needing his 6-2 victory in a third session. He emerged by different scores of 6-0, 5-7, 6-2.

Newberry became a double winner on the day by virtue of his 7-5, 6-0 decision in which he carried momentum from a tight first set into a lopsided second. Nikita Kitaev joined the gritty gang after losing his first set, rolling back to post 6-2, 6-1 decisions in perhaps the best vigor Otterbein has needed to show all season.

The Cardinals have a quick turnaround for their final non-conference match of the season on Sunday afternoon at Denison, with opening serve at 3 p.m. They will then close the OAC regular season next weekend at John Carroll.
