Day 1 Recap: Cardinals Begin OAC Outdoor in Tiffin

CURRENT RESULTS

TIFFIN, Ohio – It was a solid opening day for both Otterbein squads at the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Track & Field Championships, as plenty of Cardinals achieved podium status in setting the tone for Friday's finale.

Seven (of 21) total events have been officially scored, and the Otterbein men currently sit atop the leaderboard with Mount Union at 55 points each. The women's lineup is sitting fourth at the moment, seven points back of third.

Men's Highlights:
  • Perhaps no result in the meet will end up being more notable than Richmond Honkpo's long jump, as the freshman phenom broke a 54-year old Otterbein record in claiming the OAC crown. He soared 24-3 ½ to surpass former standout Nate Van Wey's longstanding mark of 23-9 ½, posted way back in 1970.

  • Honkpo edged out Marietta All-American Addison Painter for the title and now ranks top-five nationally, good enough to a repeat ticket to the upcoming NCAA Championships.

  • A combined 17 points were generated in the pole vault thanks to the trio of Nick Agerter (second), Joe Hill (third) and Joshua Miller (sixth). Agerter cleared 14-10 while Hill posted 14-6 to join his teammate on the eventual podium with All-OAC status.

  • John Nice finished runner-up to Wilmington's Simon Heys in a dynamite showdown of the 10K, as Nice ran 30:37 to cross about five seconds behind. They were joined on the podium by another Quaker, who was 15 seconds back in third.

  • As they've done most of this spring, Cameron Christopher (9:22) and Garrett Miller (9:28) yielded plus results in the steeplechase. This time around, the duo finished 2-3 for conference medals and 14 points on the team total. Both comfortably ran new PR's in the process to end on a high note.

  • Izaac Swope ran 14.97 in the 110 hurdles to advance into Saturday's final, resting with the fifth-fastest time in the prelims. It marked a PR and cracked Otterbein's Top-10 list.

  • Shamar Brittman ran 55.99 to earn the third-best qualifying time in the prelims of the 400 hurdles, and will run for a medal on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

  • The 4x8 group of Jonny Powers, Gavin Kelly, Mitch Green and Jay Figgins teamed for a sixth-place finish near the end of Friday, going around in a joint effort of 7:50. It marked the sixth-best result in program history.
Women's Highlights:
  • Peyton Proffitt settled for runner-up in the pole vault to begin the day, working through some adversity to notch 12-4 ½ and hit the podium. She rested behind ONU's Claire Schweller (12-6 ½), as the duo will surely see each other again at nationals.

  • The Cardinals racked up nine points in the javelin behind the tandem of Olivia Kahoun (105-11) and Peyton Carpenter (103-0), both finishing top five in the event with 25 participants.

  • Ravyn Goodsoon earned four points for the team in the discus, tossing 119-5 to end the day in fifth place. The field had 24 competitors overall.
  • Alexis Weber landed seventh in the long jump with a best effort of 17-1 and change.

  • The 4x8 relay missed All-OAC podium honors by one spot (fourth) to conclude opening day, as the quartet of Sarah Scarborough, Josey Johnson, Alyssa Mattis and Angela Maio covered the track in 9:43.

  • Genevieve Legawiec delivered the fifth-fastest qualifying time in the 400 hurdle prelims, going around in 1:05 and change. She will run for an OAC title come middle of Friday afternoon.
Friday Finale:

Day two will begin with field events at 11 in the morning and then running starting at 2:30 p.m. All podium and team awards will then be presented afterward inside.
