FINAL RESULTS
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – It might not have been a podium result for talented freshman
Richmond Honkpo on Thursday afternoon at his first NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships, but the long jumper still recorded his second Top-10 national finish to cap a standout inaugural campaign.
Honkpo, coming off 10th in the same event at NCAA Indoor in early March, admirably made finals this time around before having to rest one place shy (ninth) in the event littered with impressive leapers. He posted a top jump of 7.21 meters (23-8).
Competing out of the second flight in the field of 22, Honkpo unfortunately fouled during his first attempt but then posted 6.98 meters (22-10 ¾) on his second comeback down the runway… He then chalked up his best effort of the day (23-8, 7.21 meters) on his final jump of prelims to sneak into the finals.
Honkpo then landed consecutive marks of 7.13 meters (23-4 ¾) to begin the main event before his final try wasn't quite that far. After all jumps were counted, he and Southern Virginia's Andre Lucas both rested with a top result of 7.21… but Lucas earned the eighth/final All-American spot by virtue of a better second-best jump on his final leap.
Joshua Rivers from UW-Oshkosh backed up his top seed by winning the national crown after soaring 26-1.
