Otterbein names Jake Sherer Head Athletic Trainer

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Otterbein University Athletics is excited to announce Jake Sherer as its next Head Athletic Trainer, as announced on Monday afternoon.

Sherer brings seven years of athletic training experience to the role, including the last five years serving Otterbein's 650-plus student-athletes. Bringing familiarity with the Cardinal athletic programs, he has worked primarily with the football, track and field, and women's lacrosse teams. He led the development of the graduate athletic training students with Otterbein and Antioch, serving as a preceptor and helping develop the next generation of healthcare professionals through hands-on instruction and professional guidance. Sherer was integral in the students' development in athletic training skills, overseeing and directing emergency situation scenarios, evaluations, and rehabilitation implementation and progressions.

"I am excited to step into the Head Athletic Trainer role and build on the strong foundation our department has established," said Sherer. "I look forward to continuing that growth by investing in our staff and fostering a culture of collaboration built on trust, exceptional care for our student-athletes and strong partnerships with our coaches."

Sherer will oversee all aspects of the athletic training department for Otterbein's 650-plus student-athletes including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation efforts. He will also continue to collaborate closely with team physicians, coaches, strength and conditioning staff and healthcare providers to ensure quality care for Cardinal student-athletes.

Sherer has been actively involved in the overall growth of the athletic department at Otterbein. He helped with the establishment of the Riddell InSite impact tracking system for football, enhancing athlete safety through advanced head-impact monitoring throughout the season. His background in strength and conditioning proved helpful as he advised equipment upgrades in the university weight room. He has served on multiple hiring committees for coaches and other personnel.

"What impresses me most about Jake is his calm demeanor in emergency situations," said Director of Athletics, Dr. Greg Lott. "It is clear that he also connects well with our student-athletes and has a love for Otterbein. Jake presented strong ideas to help our athletic training room evolve and I am excited for his leadership."

Prior to arriving at Otterbein, Sherer served as Head Athletic Trainer at Mansfield Senior High School, where he oversaw athletic training operations for more than 300 student-athletes. During his time there, he reconstructed the department's policy and procedure manual, developed a Return-to-Learn protocol for post-concussion management, updated emergency action plans across athletic facilities and managed departmental budgeting.

Familiar with the student-athlete experience, Sherer was a decorated cross country and track and field athlete at both the NAIA and NCAA Division I levels. He competed at Mount Vernon Nazarene University, receiving his Bachelor's degree in 2017 before competing at Weber State University where he earned his Master's of Science in Athletic Training, primarily running the 800m.
