Tory Blatt Smyers was a trailblazer for the inaugural Otterbein women’s lacrosse team.
Joining a brand new program came with its challenges, but Tory’s long-time friend and teammate since seventh grade, Alyssa Johnson, encouraged her to attend Otterbein and play lacrosse. As the team forged a path that had never been traveled before, uncertainty surrounded who would emerge as leaders and who the team would rely on most during games. Tory credits much of the team’s early success to head coach Stephani Schmidt, who worked tirelessly to build trust and foster a strong team culture from the ground up.
Tory quickly stepped into a leadership role, breaking numerous records—many of which have stood for over eight seasons. She remains among the top five in Otterbein’s history across several statistical categories. Her 184 goals and 221 points both rank second all-time in the program, while she ranks fourth in ground balls (123) and sixth in draw controls (161).
Off the field, Tory excelled just as impressively. She is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American and a two-time First Team All-OAC selection. Additionally, she earned First Team CoSIDA Academic All-District honors twice and was honored with Otterbein’s 2015 OAC Clyde Lamb Award.
