Cards Split to Open Fall Season

SPRINGFIELD, OHIO—Otterbein opened the fall portion of its 2010-11 season, splitting a pair of matches with Wittenberg and Sinclair last Saturday in Springfield.

The Cardinals lost 6-3 to host Wittenberg before rebounding with a 6-3 win over Sinclair.

“Three days of practice and traveling with a six-person team put some limits on the Lady Cards line-up, said head coach Pat Anderson, who is in her 15th season with the Cardinals. "I thought Wittenberg played well and had some nice depth to their team."

Freshman Julie Stroyne won all four of her matches, including a 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 decision over Wittenberg’s Leah Ann Miller at first singles. Stroyne teamed up with sophomore Megan Asterino to earn a win at first doubles against Wittenberg.

Sophomore Taylor Jordan won three of four matches, including wins at first singles against Sinclair and third singles against Wittenberg.

"There is no doubt we have a lot of work to do, starting with doubles partnerships and working on our mental toughness,” Anderson said. “But this is a very determined group of athletes and I have no doubt we will get there."

The Cardinals continue fall play this week, traveling to Cedarville, 4 p.m., Thursday and the University of Northwestern, noon, Sunday.
