Women's tennis has strong showing at Oberlin Invitational

OBERLIN, Ohio – Competing on Friday and Sunday, the Otterbein University women's tennis team was back in action at the Oberlin Invitational. The tournament featured singles and doubles play, with no team scores for the event.

The Cardinals picked up several victories on Friday. Julia Carpenco opened the indoor competition with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 victory over Ohio Northern's Jocelyn Reinhart, while Avi Gullion followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win. Sophomore Molly Jones also earned a straight-set victory, defeating Tiffin's Elliett Briggs 6-1, 6-2.

First year Brooklyn Murlin added another Otterbein victory in a three-set battle, knocking off another Dragon in Grace Arnold 2-6, 6-4, 10-2 after dropping the opening set. In outdoor action, Raina Smith added a 6-3 victory over her opponent in the opening singles portion.

Competition resumed on Sunday for the Cardinals in the doubles portion of the event. Jones and Carpenco led the way for the Cardinals, posting a pair of victories. The duo opened play with a thrilling 7-6 (1) triumph over the Tiffin pairing of Arnold and Briggs before a 6-4 victory.

Niya Bell and Breanna Ball also recorded two wins on the day. The tandem defeated an Oberlin duo by a 6-3 score before edging their second opponent 7-5. Murlin and Smith defeated Oberlin's Guzman and Lopez by a solid 6-2 margin. The freshman duo of Nora Pixler and Gullion also earned a straight-set victory, coming over Oberlin's Soong and Kuzmina 6-2.

Select members of the team will close out the fall season on Sep. 25 at the ITA Central Regional, hosted by Kalamazoo College.
