MASON, Ohio – Coming down to the No. 2 singles match, the Otterbein University women's tennis team defeated No. 3 seed Capital University, 4-3 in the OAC Tournament Semifinals.
Taryn Simmers clinched the match for the Cardinals with a 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 2 singles.
The Cardinals got out to a quick start, earning the doubles point. Simmers and Niya Bell rolled to a 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles over Capital's Stephanie Makris and Scarlett Stephens. Molly Jones and Caitlin Pennington secured the doubles point for Otterbein with a 6-4 win over Ella McGlynn and Addison Kokensparger at No. 3 doubles.
Capital found its momentum in singles action, winning at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Jones, a first-year for the Cardinals, won her match by a 6-3, 6-1 margin at No. 5 singles over Jenny Rollins. At No. 6 singles, Raina Smith provided Otterbein with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Both teams were locked at 3-3 with No. 2 singles still in action.
Simmers won the first set 6-4 in a tight match against Annika Hansen. Trailing 5-4 in the second, Simmers rallied to win the next three points to send the Cardinals into the OAC Championship match to win 6-4, 7-5.
In the other semifinal match, Ohio Northern defeated Mount Union 4-0.
Tomorrow, Otterbein will take on the Polar Bears in the OAC Tournament Championship match. Match time is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.
