NEW CONCORD, OHIO – The Otterbein University softball team earned a split at Muskingum University Saturday to open its Ohio Athletic Conference schedule, winning 7-6 in game one before falling 9-1 in game two.
Muskingum moves to 6-11 overall and 1-1 with the split, while the Cardinals now sit at 7-5 on the season and 1-1 in league play.
The Cards, who entered the seventh inning trailing 6-5, fought to even the game when Brooke Albright scored off a Muskingum throwing error.
Otterbein then took the lead with an RBI single from sophomore Erin Carpenter in the top of the eighth inning, and freshman Chelsea Burns held the Muskies in the bottom of the inning to secure the victory.
Carpenter and junior Casey Clarridge each drove in two runs for the Cards in the win.
Clarridge launched a home run in the first inning of game two, give Otterbein an early 1-0 lead, but the Muskies eventually grabbed a 2-1 lead by the fourth inning before blowing the game open with seven runs in the next inning.
The team returns to action Wednesday, March 30 when it travels to Gambier for a doubleheader with Kenyon College.
