WESTERVILLE, OHIO – The Otterbein University softball team moved to 13-9 on the season by splitting a doubleheader with cross-town rival Capital University Sunday afternoon, losing the first game 6-1 and bouncing back in game two for a 3-2 victory.
Both teams now sit 2-4 in Ohio Athletic Conference play.
The Cardinals finished the week with a 4-2 record, also splitting with Wittenberg before sweeping Kenyon College.
Otterbein jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead against Capital in game two thanks to two-out situational hitting. Three consecutive singles by sophomores Erin Carpenter and Brooke Albright, and freshman Kayla Woodward plated a run in the first inning.
Otterbein caught fire again with two outs in the third inning when freshman leftfielder Kristen Ramer knocked in two runs with a single to center field, bumping the Cards out to a 3-0 lead.
Pitchers Kelsey Long and Natalie Zwicker limited the Crusaders to two runs in the final four innings, with Zwicker picking up her first win of the season.
Capital freshman pitcher Jessica Montgomery surrendered an early run to Otterbein, but shut the door and limited the Cardinal offense to that lone run on seven hits in game one.
Carpenter and freshman centerfielder Laura Basford paced the Cardinals with three hits apiece on the day. Ramer drove in two runs.
Otterbein returns to action on Tuesday, April 12 when they host Wilmington College for a conference doubleheader.
