WESTERVILLE, OHIO - The Otterbein University softball team split a pair of home doubleheaders this past week, sweeping The College of Wooster on Friday by marks of 5-4 and 3-0 before dropping games of 9-1 and 7-5 to John Carroll University Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals now sit 9-7 overall and 1-3 in Ohio Athletic Conference play.
Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth against Wooster, the Cards fought back to tie the game when freshman leftfielder Jami Litzke scored on a Wooster throwing error.
Senior shortstop Megan Studebaker gave Otterbein the lead for good, 5-4, in the sixth when she hit the game winning home run to centerfield. Freshman Chelsea Burns held the Fighting Scots scoreless in the seventh inning to secure the victory and pick up her third win on the season.
Sophomore Brooke Albright led the Cardinals at the plate with a double and two-run home run.
In game two freshman pitcher Kelsey Long pitched a complete game shutout with six strikeouts. Junior outfielder Casey Clarridge tripled and drove in a run to pace the Cards hitting attack.
In a bizarre circumstance the Cardinals were the visiting team on their own diamond come Saturday afternoon against JCU. The game was originally scheduled in University Heights, but was moved to Westerville due to inclement weather and allowed the Blue Streaks to retain home field advantage.
John Carroll used a seven-run second inning to vault ahead early, and never looked back en route to the 9-1 victory to open the day.
The Cards scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning of game two, cutting a Blue Streak lead to 7-4, but only managed one more run the rest of the game to suffer the 7-5 loss.
Clarridge paced the Cardinals with three hits on the day, including a double. Sophomore catcher Erin Carpenter drove in two runs.
Otterbein returns to action on Tuesday, April 5 when they host Wittenberg University in a non-conference doubleheader.
