Baseball Cards Sweep Muskingum

WESTERVILLE, OHIO – The Otterbein University men’s baseball team earned victories of 3-1 and 10-2 Saturday afternoon at Fishbaugh Field, sweeping Muskingum University (13-24, 6-12 OAC) to stay alive in the race for OAC postseason play.

The Cardinals, 19-20 overall and 9-9 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, will now need John Carroll University to lose both games at Ohio Northern Sunday afternoon in order to qualify for the four-team conference tournament.

Senior John LaCorte surrendered a leadoff home run to Muskingum in game one, but settled in to allow just one more hit en route to a complete-game victory.

Junior Robb Hendershot delivered what would be the game-winning RBI with a grounder through the right-side in the bottom of the sixth, and Scott Staarmann helped add an insurance run with a suicide squeeze bunt two batters later.

Sophomore Wes Meadows singled to centerfield to give Otterbein an early 1-0 lead in game two, but the Muskies would even the game at 1-1 with a run in the third after a Cardinal throwing error.

An RBI from freshman Greg Moomaw broke the tie in the bottom of the inning, and senior Josh Coleman then roped a two-run double to left-center to give the Cards breathing room at 4-1.

Otterbein added four more runs in the fifth frame, and sophomore Matt Frey (5-2) remained rock solid by allowing just three hits and one earned run over seven innings.

Senior Travis Stephens came on to pitch the eighth and ninth innings, while senior Elliott Greenhill launched a two-run home run in the eighth inning in what may have been his final career at-bat.

Meadows, Coleman, Greenhill, Hendershot, Staarmann, and Thomas Linder all tallied two RBIs on the afternoon.
