Box Score
WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Otterbein University men’s soccer notched its first conference victory Wednesday afternoon, earning a 2-1 upset win over visiting Wilmington College at Clements Field.
The Cardinals now move to 5-8-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the conference, dropping the Quakers to 8-5-1 on the season and 4-1-1 against league foes in the process.
Otterbein’s senior captain Dustin Kiaski put his team ahead early, registering his sixth goal of the season by corralling a loose ball in the box and finishing lower left.
The Cards took the 1-0 advantage into halftime, but Wilmington appeared to have a chance in the 57th minute when the ball squirted out of a cluster and trickled near the Otterbein goal. However, Cardinal goalkeeper Kyle Ripma came off the line to clear the ball with a sliding kick and keep the match scoreless.
Otterbein continued to make the most of its few offensive chances, scoring again in the 63rd minute when freshman Kalen Kress juked a Wilmington player and drove a pass upfield to classmate Luis Rivas.
Rivas quickly made his way to the ball, lofting a shot from 35 yards out over the charging Quaker goalkeeper for the score.
Wilmington answered quickly with a header goal off a free kick from Martin Holmquist, but the Cardinal defense would stand strong and fight off the Wilmington flurry for the win.
Wilmington finished with a 20-4 shot advantage, but saw most attempts miss the target. Otterbein keeper Kyle Ripma came up with four saves while Antonio Trujillo did not have any in net for the visitors.
Otterbein rounds out the week on the road, traveling to Alliance, Ohio to play the University of Mount Union. Starting time is set for 3 p.m.
