ALLIANCE, OHIO – The Cardinals combined for 19 hits in two games and swept the University of Mount Union Saturday afternoon, winning 7-1 and 7-4 at the 23rd Street Field.
Otterbein University now moves to 15-5 overall, and 4-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Meanwhile, the Purple Raiders fall to 2-4 in the OAC, 10-14 overall.
The Cardinals got on the board early in their 7-1 game one victory. Sophomore Laura Basford led the game off with a triple and scored on a single by junior Erin Carpenter.
Otterbein tacked on all the runs they would need in the second when a double by junior Casey Clarridge knocked in two runs to make the score 3-0.
Clarridge finished game two 2-for-5 at the plate with four RBIs and a stolen base.
Sophomore Maggie McMahan (2-3) earned the win for the Cardinals. She limited the Purple Raiders to just one hit in five shutout innings pitched.
Otterbein struck early once again in game two, and provided enough run support in their 7-4 win.
Junior Brooke Albright’s two-out single knocked in Clarridge from second base to put the Cards up 1-0 early.
Mount Union took the lead with a run in both the first and second innings.
Otterbein’s bats got going in the fourth when the Cardinals scored three runs on three hits, including a two RBI double by sophomore Rachel Puthoff, to retake the lead at 4-2.
The Cardinals added two more runs in the fifth to go up 6-2, which proved to be an insurmountable lead for Otterbein.
Sophomore Kelsey Long (7-0) earned the game two win. She allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits to pick up the victory.
McMahan tossed three scoreless innings to pick up her second save of the year.
Basford had an impressive day for the Cardinals. The Massillon Jackson alum combined to hit 6-for-8 (.750) with two RBIs, four runs scored, and two stolen bases on the day.
Otterbein returns to action this Thursday, April 4, when the host Kenyon for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
