ALLIANCE, OHIO -- The Otterbein University women’s tennis team edged the University of Mount Union 5-4, Saturday afternoon in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) match.
The Cardinals improve to 2-0 in the OAC, 5-7 overall. Meanwhile, the Purple Raiders fall to 8-4 overall, 1-1 in the conference.
Despite the 38 degree weather in northeast Ohio, the duo of sophomore Julie Stroyne and junior Taylor Jordan seemed to know where the other one was, winning 8-3 in first doubles.
The new partnership of freshmen Kelsey Leachko and Emily Harper came from behind to claim a win at third doubles. Trailing 5-2, then 6-3, the doubles tandem rallied for a 9-7 victory for the Cardinals.
Stroyne picked up the victory at first singles. She cruised to a first set 6-2 victory. However, in the second set her opponent managed to tie things up before Stroyne closed the tiebreaker at 7-1 and took the second set, 7-6.
Also picking up a singles win for the Cardinals was senior Angela Sammons. She earned a 6-4, 6-3 win in the fourth spot for Otterbein.
Jordan got off to a slow start at second doubles after dropping the first set 2-6. But she battled to win the second 7-6 (8-6 tie breaker), and clinched the win for the Cardinals with a convincing 6-1 victory in the third set.
Otterbein will return to action this Wednesday, April 4, to take on Ohio Northern University in Ada. The match, which was originally scheduled for April 6, will begin at 3:30 p.m.
