Cardinals Fall to Ohio Wesleyan

Box Score

WESTERVILLE, OHIO – Otterbein University scored four of the first five goals of the second half, but the comeback would ultimately fall short in falling 12-6 to visiting Ohio Wesleyan University Tuesday evening in men’s lacrosse action.

Ohio Wesleyan (9-2) appeared as if they may run away with the game early after scoring two goals in the first 74 seconds, but Otterbein (4-4) settled in and got on the scoreboard with an Andrew Donatelli goal at the 10:06 mark.

Andrew Donatelli brought the deficit to 3-2 late in the first period, getting a piece of a long pass from defender Mike Spatafore and deflecting it into the net. However, the Battling Bishops caught fire with five unanswered goals in the second period en route to an 8-2 halftime lead.

Otterbein regrouped and stormed out to begin the second half by recording four of the five goals in the third quarter, the last coming from sophomore Pat Teynor with 3:17 remaining in the period.

Unfortunately, the Cardinals would get no closer as Ohio Wesleyan rebounded with three scores in the fourth to preserve the victory.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Otterbein 39-27 for the contest and won 14 of the game’s 20 faceoffs. The Bishops were successful on 14 of 18 clear attempts while the Cards went just 14 of 27.

Four different Ohio Wesleyan players tied for a game-high two goals and Otterbein got its six goals from six different players. Spatafore tallied the first two assists of his career in the game, while leading scorer Mikey O’Neal was held without a goal for the first time this season.

Otterbein goalie Adam Hatchard came up with a season-high 15 saves in the cage whipe OWU goalie Ryan McMahon had 11 of his own.

The Cardinals next host Bethany College (W Va.) Thursday at 5 p.m.
