WESTERVILLE, OHIO – Led by sophomores Laura Basford and Chelsea Burns, the Cardinals swept Wilmington College Wednesday afternoon, winning 6-5 in extra innings before taking the night cap 8-0 in a run-rule shortened game.
Otterbein University moves to 6-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC), 19-7 overall. Meanwhile, the Quakers fall to 11-17 overall, 2-6 in the OAC.
Burns (3-2) picked up wins in both games. She earned the game one win after holding the Quakers hitless in 2.1 innings of relief and then limited Wilmington to only four hits while pitching a shutout in game two.
The Cardinals won a back-and-forth game one in eight innings, 6-5.
Otterbein jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the first five innings, highlighted by a two-run home run by junior Erin Carpenter

Wilmington scored all of their runs in the sixth. The Quakers tagged Cardinals sophomore pitcher Kelsey Long for five hits to start the frame before knocking her out of the game on a two-RBI double that made the score 5-4.
Otterbein was down to their final two outs of the game when senior Casey Clarridge looped a single down the right field line. Carpenter followed by driving a pitch to straight-away center field for a game-tying RBI double.
The Cardinals played small-ball in the eighth to put the winning run on third. Sophomore Rachel Puthoff led the inning off with a walk and was sacrificed over to third on two bunts.
Basford followed with a line drive single to right-center field to send Otterbein to the game one victory.
Clarridge, Carpenter, and junior Brooke Albright combined to hit 6-for-11 with five RBIs and four runs scored for Otterbein in the first game.
The Cardinals used a much different style of play in game two. Otterbein only needed five innings to knock off the Quakers, 8-0.
The Cardinals were only held scoreless in the second and chased the Wilmington starting pitcher after just 2.1 innings.
Basford carried the momentum of her game-winning hit into the second contest. She finished game two 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs, two runs scored, and a stolen base.
The Cardinals will return to action this Saturday, April 14, when they head to University Heights to take on John Carroll University for an OAC doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
