MARIETTA, OHIO – The Cardinals split a pair of games with Marietta College, falling 6-0 in game one before winning 9-4 in game two in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) double header.
Otterbein University moves to 20-10 overall, 7-5 in the OAC. Meanwhile, the Pioneers improve to 6-8 in the OAC, 18-14 overall.
The Cardinals struck for nine runs on 15 hits in their 9-4 game two victory.
Marietta got on the board early and took a 1-0 lead after the first inning. But Otterbein turned in an eight-run third inning and never looked back.
The Cardinals led the third inning off with seven-consecutive hits, including a two-run home run by junior Erin Carpenter. The Cardinals totaled 10 hits in the inning that broke the game wide open.
Carpenter led the Cardinals at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs. Sophomore Laura Basford turned in a 4-for-5 performance with an RBI and two runs scored.
Sophomore Maggie McMahan (4-4) earned the win on the mound in game two, while classmate Chelsea Burns tossed 4.2 innings in relief to preserve the victory.
The Cardinals were shut down in their 6-0 game one loss. Otterbein was limited to four hits and zero multi-hit innings.
Sophomore Kelsey Long (8-2) took the loss for the Cardinals. She allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits in five innings.
Otterbein returns to action this Thursday, April 19, when they will travel to play the College of Wooster. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
