TIFFIN, OHIO – The Cardinals picked up a huge 4-3 victory after losing the first game 4-2 to Heidelberg University Thursday afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play.

With the split, Otterbein University goes to 24-14 overall, and 9-7 in the OAC. The Cardinals are now in a tie with Muskingum University for third place in the conference. Meanwhile, the Student Princes improve to 6-9 in the OAC, 16-18 overall.

After losing game one 4-2, the Cardinals entered the top of the third inning of the second game trailing 3-0.

Senior Casey Clarridge got the rally started in the third with a one out single. Junior Erin Carpenter followed her with an RBI triple, and freshman Kayla Woodard kept the hits coming with an RBI single of her own to make the score 3-2.

Otterbein tacked on two more to take the lead in the fourth. Sophomore Laura Basford and Clarridge both had RBI hits to help the Cardinals go ahead in the game, 4-2.

Sophomore Chelsea Burns (4-4) tossed 5.1 innings of shutout ball in relief to pick up the win. She limited the Student Princes to three hits and struck out seven batters. She also pitched 1.1 shutout innings in the Cardinals game one loss.
In Otterbein’s 4-2 game one loss the Student Princes tagged reigning OAC Pitcher of the Week sophomore Maggie McMahan (6-5) for four runs (two earned) on 10 hits in 4.2 innings pitched.

The Cardinals jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning. But the Student Princes scored one in the third, and took the lead with a three-run fifth inning.

Otterbein threatened in the seventh with the bases loaded and two outs, but a ground out ended the Cardinals hopes of extending the game.

Basford’s stolen base in the seventh inning of game one tied Gwen Jefferies 1996 record of 28 stolen bases in a single-season at Otterbein.

The Cardinals will conclude their 2012 regular season this Saturday, April 28, when they host cross-town rival Capital University for a doubleheader. It will be Breast Cancer Awareness Day at Rike Field and the Cardinals will honor and remember victims and survivors prior to game one. Fans are encouraged to wear pink.
