WESTERVILLE, OHIO – The Otterbein University women’s tennis team concluded their 2011-12 regular season with a pair of conference wins over Capital University and Heidelberg University.

The Cardinals defeated Heidelberg 6-0 in a rain-shortened match on Wednesday before they took down Capital 9-0 Saturday afternoon in Westerville.

“Trying to reschedule with finals coming up and the OAC tournament starting next week gets really difficult,” Head Women’s Tennis Coach Pat Anderson said. “The girls have been practicing hard and were ready to get the job done. Our three singles wins were very impressive.”

With the victories, Otterbein finishes the season 5-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) and 9-9 overall. The Cardinals will enter the OAC Tournament as the No. 3 seed and will host No. 6 Heidelberg at Tuesday, May 1, at 3:30 in Westerville.

The Cardinals received another strong week from the reigning OAC Player of the Week sophomore Julie Stroyne. She went a perfect 2-0 in both first singles and first doubles. She defeated Deidre Potter of Heidelberg (6-1, 6-0) and Elisabeth McLaughlin of Capital (6-0, 6-0).

She also paired up with junior Taylor Jordan to defeat the first doubles team from Heidelberg 8-2, and the team from Capital 8-3.

Jordan had an impressive week on her own at second singles as well. She defeated Heidelberg’s Kayla Gerber (6-3, 6-1) and Alyssa Trier of Capital (6-0, 6-0).

Senior Cassie Brungarth also had a multi-win week, defeating Rebecca Hunt of Capital (6-1, 6-3) at third singles and picking up two wins at second doubles with sophomore Alana Cheplowitz. The duo beat the team from Heidelberg 8-6 and defeated the Capital team 8-1.

Senior Christine Kuester a pair of victories for the Cardinals. She defeated Melissa Herrera-Ortiz of the Berg (6-0, 6-0) at sixth singles and Corrine Hohenstein of Capital at fifth singles (6-1, 6-1).

Rounding out Otterbein’s winners in singles competition were senior Angela Sammons and freshman Emma Krummel. Sammons earned a win over Capital’s Michelle Guy (6-1, 6-1) in fourth singles, while Krummel defeated Kathryn MacFarland of Capital (6-0, 6-0).

The freshman duo of Emily Harper and Kelsey Leachko earned victories in both matches at third doubles. They beat the Heidelberg team 8-5 before cruising to an 8-0 win over the Capital pairing.

Krummel was up in her Heidelberg match 6-4, 5-1 serving 40-15 when play was halted because of rain. Brungarth at third singles was on serve 1-2 and Sammons at fourth singles was down a break 4-5 when the rain started coming down hard enough to stop play in Tiffin.

The Cardinals will begin postseason play this Tuesday, May 1, with their first round match against Heidelberg. The match is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. For more information on the OAC Tournament, click here.
