ADA, OHIO – The Cardinals were swept by Ohio Northern University, 10-1 and 5-1, in a matchup of the top-two teams in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Friday afternoon.
Otterbein University falls to 17-7, 4-2 in the OAC. Meanwhile, the Polar Bears take sole possession of first place with a 6-0 OAC record, 15-5 overall.
Ohio Northern got off to a fast start in game one. The Polar Bears tallied four runs in the first inning and did not look back. Ohio Northern then extended their lead to 5-0 in the fourth on a pair of base hits.
The Cardinals got on the board in the fifth unconventionally. Otterbein junior Brooke Albright was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make the score 5-1.
Ohio Northern held the Cardinals scoreless in the final two frames to preserve the victory.
The Polar Bears also jumped on top of the Cardinals in game two. Ohio Northern scored in every inning of their 10-1 five inning win.
The OAC’s leader in wins sophomore Kelsey Long (8-1) was tagged for nine runs on 14 hits while taking her first loss of the season.
Sophomore Rachel Puthoff led the way for the Cardinals at the plate in the two games. The third baseman hit 4-for-5 (.800) with a stolen base in the series.
The Cardinals return to action this Wednesday, April 11, when they host Wilmington College for an OAC doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled to take place at 3:30 p.m.
