BEXLEY, Ohio – The Otterbein University men's soccer team concluded its 2013 season on a high note Saturday afternoon, coming from behind to win, 2-1, at cross-town rival Capital University.
The Cardinals finish the season at 9-9 overall and 4-5 against the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC), while the Crusaders drop to 8-7-3 this season, 5-4 within the league.
Both teams played to a scoreless first half before Capital took the lead, getting a goal from Zach Inman at the 60:23 mark off a pass from Joe Alecusan.
The Cardinals answered back less than 10 minutes later, seeing sophomore Reid Wolfe rebound a ball of a goalie save and shooting into the lower right corner for the equalizer.
Otterbein got the game-winner shortly after in the 72nd minute, as junior Conor Holland struck a free kick from 45 yards out that made its way through a crowded box and into the net.
The Cardinals would hang on down the stretch behind a few timely saves from senior goalkeeper Kiley Gessner, including a shot that hit the post and trickled across the end line before Gessner brought it in.
Capital finished with slim advantages in shots, 11-9, and corner kicks, 5-4.Â
Dylan Beck made six saves in net for the Crusaders while Gessner, making his first-career start, finished with five. Gessner, having not played organized soccer since the eighth grade, spent the last four years with the Otterbein men's basketball program prior to joining the men's soccer squad earlier this fall.
The Cardinals finish tied for sixth in the OAC standings with Heidelberg University, but will unfortunately miss out on the final conference tournament spot due to losing the head-to-head matchup in late October.
