OBERLIN, Ohio – The Otterbein University women’s tennis team fell to Oberlin College 8-1 Saturday afternoon in a non-conference showdown.
The Cardinals fall to 3-2 on the season with the loss. Meanwhile, the Yeowomen, who entered the matchup as the No. 8 ranked team in the region, improve to 4-1.
Otterbein struggled in doubles play against Oberlin, losing all three pairings. Only one of the Cardinals’ pairings worked together last season.
"The difference in doubles was Oberlin had 2 players on at all times,” Head Coach Pat Anderson said. “We had a couple games with only one player being on and the other just a little off, it's called nerves and something we have to work on.”
Junior Julie Stroyne picked up Otterbein’s lone win on the day in first singles with a hard fought win over the region’s seventh ranked player, Farah LeClerq (6-4, 7-6 [7-5]).
“Julie used every bit of her mental and physical ability to win this match,” Coach Anderson said. “She executed the right shots at the right time coming into the net to win her points.”
Otterbein returns to action this Saturday afternoon when they head north to take on The College of Wooster. The match is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. The Cardinals will then resume play when they take a trip down to central Florida on March 17 for six matches in six days.
“We saw a lot of things we can build on,” Coach Anderson said. “Hopefully by conference play we will be where we want to be.”
