Cardinals Drop Two Against Marietta

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Cards could not get their offense rolling as they fell 9-1 and 10-2 to visiting Marietta College Wednesday afternoon at Rike Field.

The losses drop Otterbein University to 13-11 overall and 3-7 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). The Pioneers, who entered the twinbill tied for the conference lead with Capital University, improve to 20-10 overall and 10-2 in the OAC.

The Pioneers jumped on the Cards early in game one, scoring four runs in the first inning by utilizing two home runs, and did not look back.

Otterbein scattered five hits in game one but failed to put anything together. The Cards lone run came from sophomore Kayla Woodard in her first plate appearance of the season. Woodard had not appeared in any games due to an injury, but made her first hit of the season count by driving in junior Kristen Ramer.

Game two saw a similar story play out as Marietta scored three runs in the first inning and continued to build its lead throughout the contest.

Otterbein was finally able to put some hits together in the bottom half of the fourth, pushing two runs across from an RBI-double by junior Rachel Puttoff and an RBI fielder’s choice by junior Calli Studebaker.

It would not be enough, however, as Marietta maintained an eight-run lead and secured a run-rule shortened game-two win.

The Cardinals will return to action this Friday, April 19, when they travel north to Delaware to take on Ohio Wesleyan University in an afternoon doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
