TIFFIN, Ohio – Otterbein University ran its Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) record to 3-1 Tuesday afternoon, notching a key doubleheader sweep at rival Heidelberg University.
The Cardinals won by scores of 4-3 and 4-2, improving their overall record to 16-4 as a result. Heidelberg, meanwhile, falls to 13-8 overall and 2-2 against the league.
Senior
Wes Meadows hit successfully in both games on the day to set a new school record 26-game hitting streak. Meadows passes current teammate Thomas Linder, who compiled a 25-game streak last spring.
Meadows' holds the second-longest active hiting streak in Division III, sitting only behind Collin Radack's 28-game stretch for Hendrix College (Ark.).
Game one saw the Cardinals use a steady offensive approach in building their lead, plating one run in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings en route to a 4-1 advantage.
Heidelberg entered its final at-bat facing the three-run deficit, but took advantage of an Otterbein fielding error and used a two-out triple from Arneal Squibb to plate two runs.
Squibb would represent the tying run on third, but Meadows finished off his complete-game effort on the hill by getting the next batter to ground out.
Meadows struck out seven over his seven innings of work, improving to 4-0 this season. Catcher Chad Webster hit a perfect 3 for 3 and drove in one run while Billy Harkenrider reached base three times, registering two hits and a walk.
The second outing was another low-scoring affair, with the two sides trading runs early on. Otterbein put runners on the corners with no outs in the top of the sixth frame, but was unable to plate a run.
The Student Princes grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth, but the Cards bounced right back with two runs in the seventh to vault ahead. Freshman Tyler Kent scored on a wild pitch before sophomore
Mike Mackessy delivered the go-ahead RBI with a single through the left side.
Mackessy drove home an insurance run in the top of the ninth, and senior left-hander Dominic Poretta got three ground outs in the bottom of the frame to record his third save of the year.
Mackessy went a perfect 3 for 3 with two RBI at the plate in what was the best game of his young career. Meadows hit 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI in the second game while
Taylor Ellis went eight strong on the bump to move to 3-0.
Otterbein stays on the road for the remainder of the week, traveling to Ohio Wesleyan University for a 4 p.m. game on Wednesday before finishing with a Saturday doubleheader at Ohio Northern University.
