WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Cardinal baseball team picked up a key Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) sweep over Muskingum University, winning 13-4 and 6-2 Saturday afternoon at Fishbaugh Field.
Otterbein University (21-12, 8-6 OAC) currently sits in fourth place in the conference, with two conference doubleheaders remaining. However, Baldwin Wallace University, who sits second in the OAC, is ineligible for postseason play this season.
The Muskies (6-23, 5-9 OAC) could not control the Cardinal bats in Otterbein’s 13-4 win in game one.
The Tan and Cardinal tallied 15 hits in the win, including two mammoth three-run home runs from senior Wes Meadows. The pre-season All-American finished the game 2-for-3 with six RBI and two runs scored.
However, it was not Meadows power alone that propelled the Cardinals to the win, as 10 different batters notched base hits for Otterbein. Notably, sophomore catcher Chad Webster was 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Senior David Cydrus (3-3) allowed 11 hits, but limited the damage to just four runs (three earned) and struck out a pair to earn the win.
Otterbein received another balanced attack from its lineup to earn a 6-2 win in the second game of the twin bill.
The Cardinals plated two in the first inning, but Muskingum responded with a run in both the second and third to even the game at 2-2.
Otterbein scored one in the fourth, two in the fifth, and another in the sixth to put the game out of reach for the Muskies.
Junior Thomas Linder broke the tie game in the fourth with an RBI-double, while sophomore Sean Kettering, sophomore Jordan Ashbrook, and freshman Tyler Kent all notched RBI singles to add to the Cardinal lead.
Freshman Adam Collier (7-2) picked up the win on the bump for Otterbein. He went seven innings and limited the Muskie offense to two runs on five hits. Senior Dom Poretta pitched the final two innings to preserve the Cardinal victory.
Otterbein’s next two games will be non-conference, as they will travel to Chillicothe Monday, April 22, for a 1 p.m. game vs. the University of Rio Grande, before they host Denison University Wednesday, April 24, for a 4 p.m. game.
