Cardinals Swept at Capital

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Cardinal softball team was swept by Capital University by scores of 5-0 and 3-2 Saturday afternoon.

Otterbein University concludes the 2013 season with a 17-17 record, and a 5-11 mark in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play. Meanwhile, the Crusaders improve to 32-8 overall, 15-2 in league action, and secure the top seed and hosting rights to the 2013 OAC Tournament.

The Cardinals could not muster any runs in their 5-0 defeat in game one. Otterbein scattered four base hits and left several runners on base in the loss.

Capital opened the scoring, and the eventual winning run, with a solo home run in the second inning and plated a second run in the inning on a ground out to take a 2-0 lead.

The Crusaders tacked on three more in the fourth to extend their lead to 5-0, giving the Cardinals six outs to come back.
However, Otterbein only put one runner on base in the sixth inning and went down in order in the seventh to give Capital the victory.

The Cardinals got off to a fast start in the second game, but were edged out by the Crusaders once again, 3-2.

Otterbein used an RBI-single by freshman Kara Barnes and an unconventional RBI from junior Calli Studebaker to go up 2-0 in the second inning. Studebaker was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in the second run.

Capital answered in the bottom of the second with an RBI-double that scored two to knot the game up at 2-2.

The Crusaders notched the eventual winning run in the third with a ground out to take a 3-2 lead after three innings.

Otterbein had its best chance to tie or take the lead in the sixth when they had runners on first and second with two outs, but could not come up with a base hit. The Cardinals were retired in order in the top of the seventh to send the Crusaders to the sweep.

Otterbein was led at the plate by their seniors, Brooke Albright and Erin Carpenter. Both finished the afternoon with three base hits each.

The Cardinals conclude the 2013 season with a .500 record and have not had a losing season since 2010.
