WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Otterbein University men's soccer fell to an even 4-4 on the season Wednesday afternoon, suffering a 2-0 loss to visiting Oberlin College.
The Cardinals saw the first scoring opportunity of the game, but an up-close shot from junior Jared Pulliam was saved by Yeomen goalkeeper Brandt Rentel.
Both sides settled into back and forth action, with Oberlin (6-1-1) nearly getting on the scoreboard in the 22nd minute when a header attempt from Enzo Cabili hit the cross bar and deflected out of bounds.
The visitors took the lead in the 35th minute on a penalty kick goal after Otterbein goalkeeper Kyle Ripma was whistled for a foul in the box. Cabili stepped up and converted the kick to give his team a 1-0 lead.
Otterbein had a corner attempt with less than a minute to go before intermission, but the ball was kicked around before a shot from freshman Ross Pfeil went high.
The Cardinals continued to battle, but Oberlin was able to extend the lead to 2-0 at the 63:10 mark. Ripma made a diving save on a Yeomen shot, but Oberlin's Adam Chazin-Gray, who had just checked into the match, darted in to clean up the rebound for the goal.
Otterbein was unable to cut into the deficit the remainder of the way en route to the defeat. Oberlin held an 18-9 shot advantage for the match along with a 7-3 edge in corner-kick attempts.
The Cardinals will conclude the week at home, hosting Earlham College (Pa.) Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
