Box Score BEXLEY, Ohio – The Cardinal men's soccer team played another thrilling match Saturday afternoon, fighting back to tie the match twice before suffering a 4-3 loss in overtime at cross-town rival Capital University.
In what has seemed to become routine as of late, Otterbein went right down to the wire with Capital after tying the contest at 2-2, and again at 3-3, during second-half action. The rally came just three days after the Cards scored three times in the final 11 minutes to force overtime with nationally-ranked John Carroll University.
Capital scored twice early on in the 22nd and 24th minutes, but Otterbein got itself on the board just four minutes after that when junior Luis Rivas headed in a pass from teammate Luke Crea. It was his third goal in the last two outings.
Otterbein drew even less than 10 minutes into the second half, getting Nate Norris's second goal of the fall off an assists from Ross Pfeil at the 54:26 mark. Unfortunately, the Purple and White immediately responded with a goal nine seconds later after a shot from 15 yards out sailed over the head of goalkeeper Mack Stamper.
Otterbein answered yet again, watching freshman Sam Condon notch his first-career goal in the 63rd minute to continue the ferocious scoring pace and lock the game back up, at 3-3.
The score remained the same throughout regulation before Capital prevailed early in overtime, getting a cross and quick finish less than three minutes in to end the match.
Capital held a 23-14 shot margin and took seven corner kicks compared to Otterbein's three. Stamper had six stops in the Otterbein net while Trevor Funk made four of his own for the host squad.
Otterbein will be back in action Tuesday evening, hosting Ohio Northern University at Memorial Stadium for a 7 p.m. start.
