NEW ALBANY, Ohio – The Otterbein University men's lacrosse team was dealt a 10-5 loss to begin its 2014 season Saturday afternoon, falling to Ohio Wesleyan University (2-0) in a contest played at local New Albany High School.
Otterbein will return to action come Wednesday with a 4 p.m. road matchup at Wittenberg University.
The Cardinals fell behind early against Wesleyan, watching the Battling Bishops tally a pair of man-up goals en route to a 4-0 lead by the 12:31 mark of the second quarter.
Otterbein eventually got on the scoreboard when Mike Sullivan found Pat Teynor less than a minute later, and a goal from Mike Dattolo near the end of the period sent the Cards into halftime facing a 5-2 deficit.
The Bishops took control for to begin the second half, netting five of the next six scores to open a 10-3 cushion. Sullivan and Teynor each posted their second goal of the contest before time expired to cap the scoring.
Wesleyan out-shot the Cardinals 35-25, taking advantage of nearly 11 Otterbein penalty minutes to go 5 of 11 on extra-man opportunities. OWU also had eight penalty minutes of its own.
The Bishops controlled the game by securing 13 of 17 faceoff opportunities and winning the ground ball category 28-18.
Otterbein freshman James Gundling showed solid poise in his first-career start at goalie, making 13 saves on 23 chances. Ryan McMahon finished with 12 stops in the cage for Ohio Wesleyan.
