CLERMONT, Fla. – The Otterbein University softball team recently kicked off the 2014 season with its annual spring break trip, claiming victory in three of its first five games at the Dot Richardson Spring Games.

The Cardinals opened strong with an 8-1 win over Bethany College (W Va.) on Saturday afternoon, receiving six no-hit innings from freshman Lizzy Snodgrass in her collegiate debut. She struck out five batters and allowed just one unearned run.

Snodgrass helped herself with a pair of RBI at the plate while senior Rachael Puthoff and freshman Molly Riggs each went 2 for 3.

Otterbein was in line for another win to begin Sunday's action against Washington and Jefferson College, getting an RBI-single from Snodgrass in the top half of the seventh frame for a 6-5 lead. The Generals would have the last laugh, however, blasting a walk-off, two-run, homer to escape with a 7-6 win.

The Cardinals responded in the second outing of that day, jumping ahead to an early 4-2 lead over Anderson University (Ind.) before hanging on for a 6-5 triumph.

Puthoff and classmate Laura Basford each delivered two RBI for the Cardinal offense, which took advantage of six errors from the opposition throughout the matchup.

Otterbein preserved a low-scoring 1-0 victory Monday against Hope College, plating the game's only run off a double steal involving Snodgrass and Basford in the first inning.

The lead would be all that was necessary for Snodgrass, who tossed six innings of shutout ball on the bump to improve to 2-1 on the trip. Senior Calli Studebaker hit a perfect 2 for 2 during the game from the seven hole.

Otterbein, which had Monday's second game against SUNY Geneseo canceled due to weather, will take a day off Tuesday before returning to the diamond Wednesday afternoon against Trinity College (Conn.) and Bethel University (Minn.).
