Cards Fall at Regionally-Ranked Oberlin

Match Results

OBERLIN, Ohio—The Otterbein University women's tennis team, facing its second regionally-ranked team in the month of February, lost a 6-3 match at Oberlin College Friday in Oberlin.

The Cardinals opened strong, winning two of three doubles matches, but could manage just one win in singles play against Oberlin, who is ranked ninth in the region.

The doubles team of senior Julie Stroyne and sophomore Sammi Kruger won their fifth-straight match of the season, winning first doubles 8-4. Freshman Rylie Markle and junior Kelsey Leachko breezed to an 8-1 win at third doubles.

Markle, who went 2-0 on the day, captured the lone Otterbein win in singles, taking sixth singles, 6-4, 6-0. The freshman improved her singles record to 4-1.

"I knew going in that No. 1 would be tough," said head coach Pat Anderson. "Julie fought hard, but her knee is still on the mend."

Stroyne, three-time Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Year, lost her singles match, 6-0, 6-4.

Outside of Markle, sophomore Adrien Leatherwood had the best opportunity for a point in singles play. Leatherwood took fifth singles to three sets, winning the first, 6-4, before dropping the second, 6-4, and the tie-breaker, 10-4.

"The Lady Cardinals continue to move better and hit smarter," Anderson said. "They are in every game and, with a little more play, will be able to finish the points to their advantage."

Otterbein, 4-2 overall, is scheduled to play at the College of Wooster this Wednesday.
