GAMBIER, Ohio – The Cardinal men's lacrosse team suffered a tough, 10-9, overtime loss Wednesday afternoon on the road, watching Kenyon College overcome a two-goal deficit late in the fourth quarter and eventually escape victorious.
Sophomore Robbie Guiliano scored a game-high four times for Otterbein University, which falls to 3-4 on the season. The game marks the second-straight one-goal loss to the Lords, who emerged with an 8-7 win in Westerville last season.
Otterbein took a 4-3 lead into halftime after back-to-back goals from Guiliano ended the second-quarter scoring, and the Cardinals eventually bumped the lead to 6-4 midway through the third frame after a pair of scores from senior Mike Dattolo.
Kenyon battled back, netting two goals in a 72-second span that evened the contest up at 7-7 entering the final period.
The Cardinals once again seized a two-goal lead after Mikey O'Neal and Guiliano scored early in the fourth, but the Lords would not go away. The Otterbein man-down unit managed to kill a pair of penalties in the final quarter, but Kenyon eventually scored at the 3:52 mark and again with 1:25 remaining that ultimately forced an extra session.
Otterbein goalie James Gundling made a nice save early in the overtime period to keep the game locked, but the Cardinals turned the ball over on the ensuing clear attempt to give possession back to the hosts. Kenyon misfired on its next two shots before Zach Arila tallied the game-winner with just 50 seconds on the clock.
Otterbein finished with a 32-29 shot advantage, won 14 of the 22 faceoffs and forced 18 Kenyon turnovers to help overcome 5:30 in penalty minutes. The Lords were whistled for just one penalty on the day.
Senior Pat Teynor dished out a game-high four assists for a Cardinal offense that also got three goals from Dattolo. O'Neal, the team's leading scorer, added two helpers to accompany his one goal.
Sophomore faceoff specialist Carlos Salazar won 14 of his 20 chances in the middle while Drew Watson corralled a team-high six ground balls for the Tan and Cardinal.
Alex Lopez struck three times on the Kenyon offensive side while Arila finished with two scores.
Otterbein will have the weekend off before returning to action next Wednesday, hosting the College of Wooster at 4 p.m. inside Memorial Stadium.
