Box Score 2 WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein University softball team played to a doubleheader split in non-conference action Thursday against Kenyon College, winning 7-6 before a 6-5 loss in the second outing.
Senior outfielder Laura Basford reached the peak of another Otterbein statistical category during the event, breaking the program's all-time hits record of 187 with a bunt-single in the seventh inning of game one.
The Cardinals encountered some adversity in the field defensively to begin the day, committing five errors in the first inning to spot Kenyon a 6-0 lead.
Otterbein stayed the course and continued to battle throughout, eventually closing to within 6-4 as the matchup entered the final inning. The Cards struck their rally during the final at-bat, getting a 2-RBI double from Molly Riggs before a drop bunt from Kelsey Long scored Laura Basford from third base.
Basford achieved the record-breaking moment during the Cardinal rally, surpassing former Cardinal Casey Clarridge for what is now her fifth all-time school record. Basford reaches the mark despite missing time during her junior season due to injury. She now holds 13 total school records and will look to add another one in the coming days, needing just two more doubles to become the school's career leader.
"Breaking this record was really exciting, but it would not have meant anything without the amazing girls that surround me every day," Basford said. "I am so fortunate to be a part of this program and am looking forward to what the rest of the season holds for us."
Riggs went an impressive 3 for 4 in the winning effort while Rachael Puthoff, Kristen Ramer and Maggie McMahan each hit safely twice. Lizzy Snodgrass improved to 9-3 on the mound after holding Kenyon scoreless from the first inning on.
Otterbein fell behind again in game two, watching the Ladies score six runs over the middle-three innings. The Cards got back into the game with one swing of the bat, receiving a grand slam from Basford in the bottom of the fifth to finally get on the scoreboard.
The Cardinals entered their final at-bat in the exact same situation as the first game, trailing 6-4 with Maggie McMahan, Ramer and Basford due to hit. Basford and Ramer eventually stood on second and third base, respectively, with two outs, before Puthoff drove a hit through the right side of the infield. Ramer easily scored before Basford was unfortunately thrown out at the plate from right field to end the game.
Basford went 3 for 4 with four RBI in the matchup while Puthoff delivered a 2 for 4 day.
Otterbein returns to action Saturday afternoon, traveling to John Carroll University for a 1 p.m. conference doubleheader.
