Cardinals Take Down JCU in Inaugural Conference Game

Box Score
WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein University men's lacrosse program emerged victorious in its first-ever Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) game Saturday afternoon, taking down John Carroll University 15-7 in a chippy contest at Memorial Stadium.

The Cardinals (6-4) couldn't have started much better, watching Carlos Salazar win the opening faceoff to set up a scoring play just eight seconds into the game. Senior Mikey O'Neal found classmate Mike Dattolo to put the team ahead 1-0.

Marcus Willis connected with Robbie Guiliano for another Otterbein goal just a minute later, but the Blue Streaks (9-2) eventually settled in with three unanswered goals to end the period.

Otterbein ultimately regained control in the second stanza, out-scoring John Carroll 5-0 in the period which included three goals in the final 2:06 of action.

JCU trailed just 10-7 after two quick goals early in the fourth quarter, but Otterbein put the game away for good by netting five more goals in the final 10:18 to preserve the win.

Five different players scored two goals for the Cardinal offense, which posted its second-best scoring output of the season. O'Neal finished with a game-high five points and five ground balls, scoring once and dishing out four helpers.

Salazar, the reigning OAC Player of the Week, continued his strong play with another dominant performance at the faceoff-X. He won 19 of 25 chances, with three of his losses coming on illegal procedure calls.

Salazar's efforts helped Otterbein finish with a commanding 41-17 shot advantage, ultimately scoring more times than JCU had shots on goal.

Michael Roth and Declan O'Grady each scored two times to help pace the Blue Streaks, who also got 12 saves in the goal from Brian Bedell. Freshman James Gundling made five stops on the other end for Otterbein.

The game became more and more intense as the second-half progressed, with both sides combining for 20 total penalties throughout. Included in the list of infractions were seven conduct flags and three unnecessary roughness calls.

Otterbein will continue OAC play on Wednesday, traveling to Baldwin Wallace University for a 7:30 p.m. matchup.
