Box Score WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein University men's lacrosse team secured the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) regular-season championship Saturday afternoon, defeating the University of Mount Union by a score of 12-6 at Memorial Stadium.
The victory, helping the Cardinals finish the regular season at 10-4 overall and a perfect 5-0 in OAC play, locks up the top seed in next week's four-team conference tournament. Otterbein will host Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday, 5 p.m., in a semifinal matchup.
The contest saw an early 2-2 tie midway through the opening quarter, but the Cardinals settled in and finished the period with three-straight goals to open a 5-2 advantage. Otterbein senior Jeff Reese tallied the only goal of the second quarter, which ended with a scrum in front of the Cardinal bench that ultimately resulted in six penalties between the two teams.
Mount Union's Michael Taylor scored in the first minute of the third period, but Otterbein would quickly regain control with six unanswered goals that eventually widened the margin to 12-3 with 6:35 to play.
The Raiders (12-4, 4-1 OAC) tallied three goals down the stretch, but the damage had been done as the Cardinals emerged victorious.
Junior Mike Sullivan had his best scoring day of the season on the Otterbein side, scoring four times and assisting on two others en route to six points. Sophomore Marcus Willis scored once in addition to three helpers, while three other players also had a multi-point game.
Otterbein finished with a 43-15 shot advantage and captured 15 of 21 opportunities at the faceoff-X. The Cardinal defense forced Mount Union into eight unsuccessful clear attempt, doubling up in ground balls at 32-16.
Prior to the game, Reese and fellow seniors Mikey O'Neal, Pat Teynor, Mike Dattolo, Chistan White, Drew Watson, Ryan Klipa, George Wright, Connor Underwood, Tyler Reed and Andy Hufford were recognized for their contributions to the program.
As the top seed, Otterbein would also host the OAC Tournament championship game on Saturday, May 3 should it advance through the semifinal round.
