Box Score 2 WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein University softball team notched a doubleheader split Saturday afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference action, winning 6-4 before suffering a 7-3 loss to visiting Baldwin Wallace University.
The Cardinals rallied for the game-one victory, overcoming three early home runs from the Yellow Jackets to eventually plate four runs over their finals two at-bats.
RBI from senior Kelsey Long and freshman Lydia Barnes helped tie the game at 4-4 in the fifth frame before triples from freshman Molly Riggs and senior Rachael Puthoff, her second of the game, proved to be the difference-making runs in the sixth. Puthoff's play ended her with being thrown out at home in trying to convert an inside-the-park home run.
Freshman Lizzy Snograss improved to 8-2 on the mound, pitching the first two innings of the game before re-entering in the sixth and keeping BW off the scoreboard.
Senior Laura Basford, Riggs and Puthoff, the first-three hitters in the Otterbein lineup, all tallied multi-hit games to help lead the Cardinal offense.
The second game settled in as a low-scoring matchup, with BW eventually taking a marginal 2-0 lead after runs in the third and fourth innings.
Otterbein remained close entering the final inning, but the Yellow Jackets seized control with four more runs in the top half of the frame. The Cards did not go down quietly, getting a three-run homer from Basford in the seventh inning before exhausting their final out.
Both Basford and Snodgrass each went a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate in game two, with Puthoff registering the other Cardinal hit.
Otterbein will next hit the diamond Wednesday afternoon, traveling to take on Ohio Northern University in doubleheader action. Start time of game one is slated for 3 p.m.
