Otterbein Settles for Doubleheader Split with Ohio Northern

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein University baseball team settled for a doubleheader split with visiting Ohio Northern University Wednesday afternoon, moving to 15-9 on the season and 3-5 within Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play.

The Cardinals appeared to be in serious trouble near the end of game one, watching the Polar Bears (17-6, 5-3 OAC) break open a 4-4 tie in the top of the ninth inning with three runs.

Otterbein had the last laugh, however, scoring four times in the bottom of the inning to escape with the much-needed win. The Cards had exhausted two outs before scoring any runs in the final at-bat, but junior Jake Simmerman drew a bases-loaded walk before classmate Billy Harkenrider belted a three-run, walk-off double to right field that cleared the bases for an 8-7 win.

Harkenrider and catcher Mark Walton each hit safely three times in the game while Simmerman finished 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI and runs scored, including the game-winner.

Otterbein would not be as fortunate in the second affair, falling behind early after ONU's Daniel Rodriguez launched a three-run double in initial Polar Bear at-bat.

The Cards scored one run in the second frame on a fielder's choice RBI from Chad Webster, but Northern came up with five more runs over its next two at-bats to open an 8-1 margin.

Otterbein freshman Brock Frentzel tallied the first home run of his career, a two-run shot, late in the game before the Polar Bears ultimately posted a 15-3 triumph.

Harkenrider went 2 for 5 in the second game, the only Cardinal who hit safely more than once in the contest.

Otterbein stays at home to finish out the week, hosting John Carroll University (14-7, 7-1 OAC) Saturday afternoon in doubleheader action. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
