Cardinals Drop Both Games at Ohio Northern

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
ADA, Ohio – The Cardinal softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of host Ohio Northern University Wednesday afternoon, falling on the road by scores of 12-4 and 6-1.

Otterbein now sits at 10-11 overall and 3-7 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play, while the Polar Bears improve themselves to 13-14 on the season, 6-4 against the league.

The Cardinals opened game one with two runs in the first, getting a leadoff home run from Laura Basford before Lizzy Snodgrass scored on a wild pitch.

The three and a half innings would belong solely to ONU, which scored three times during the ensuing at-bat before ultimately opening a 12-2 lead entering the fifth.

Otterbein received a two-run homer from center field from senior Rachael Puthoff with two outs in the fifth, but no more runs would be generated as the hosts earned the run-rule victory.

Basford opened game two the exact same way she did the first, launching another leadoff home run to right field that gave her team an early edge.

The run would unfortunately be the only scoring play produced by Otterbein in the second affair, as Northern used a workmanlike effort with six runs between the second and sixth innings to complete the sweep.

Basford hit 2 for 3 in each game, good enough to tie the Otterbein all-time record for most hits in a career with 187. She will look to break that mark in the team's Thursday doubleheader at home with Kenyon College, starting at 3:30 p.m.
