Box Score DELAWARE, Ohio – The Otterbein University men's soccer team tallied an impressive upset victory on the road Wednesday evening, scoring the final three goals of the match to stun 12th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan, 4-1.
"This is a big win for us, especially with it coming at their place," Otterbein head coach Gerry D'Arcy said. "It's been some time since we've beat them, and when we have, it's usually been on our campus. Our back line was outstanding tonight, our midfielders routinely possessed the ball and our forwards obviously finished well. We're so pleased with the effort and the outcome."
The Cardinals (2-3) jumped ahead early this time when sophomore Ross Pfeil scooted up the left-hand side and roped a shot towards Colin Beemiller in the Ohio Wesleyan goal. Beemiller made an initial save, but Otterbein's Luis Rivas was there to storm in and bury the rebound for a 1-0 lead.
Otterbein later took the 1-0 margin into halftime, but the Battling Bishops (3-2) found an equalizer in the 59th-minute on a quick pass, dribble and shoot sequence finished by Brian Schaefer on the left side.
A young Otterbein squad gathered itself and answered 12 minutes later, watching 6'2" freshman Jaden Lunger go up and head in a corner kick from teammate Luke Crea and propel the Cards back in front. The game-winner was Lunger's first collegiate goal.
Otterbein hit OWU with a frenzy down the stretch, starting with Costa Poulias feeding a pass into the middle of the attacking zone where Jared Pulliam was there to get a quick touch and then finish. The Cards struck again less than one minute later when freshman Nate Norris took advantage of a deflection off a Bishop defender and netted his first collegiate score with under 90 seconds remaining.
"Some of this production is happening a bit earlier than we expected," D'Arcy said of his group that has defeated two nationally-ranked opponents so far. "We have a lot of young freshmen and underclassmen playing with our older players, but everyone is meshing really well. We are moving into a new home stadium soon and have a ton of guys that are enjoying competing with one another. There is a lot to be excited about right now."
The Cardinals finished with a 17-13 edge in total shots and fought off eight corner kicks from Ohio Wesleyan. Beemiller was forced to make seven stops in the Bishops net while Mack Stamper had three of his own at the Otterbein defensive end.
Otterbein will enjoy a weekend off before traveling to take on Hiram College next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
