Cardinals Rally Late to Take Down No. 16 Hiram

Box Score
HIRAM, Ohio – Otterbein University men's soccer tallied yet another impressive road victory Wednesday evening, erupting for a trio of late goals to escape with a 3-2 win at No. 16-ranked Hiram College in non-conference action.

The win moves the Cardinals to an even 3-3 on the season, with all three wins coming against nationally-ranked schools. Otterbein previously won at 18th-ranked Carnegie Mellon and No. 12 Ohio Wesleyan.

Hiram got the better of Otterbein early on, taking a 1-0 lead into halftime after a 19th-minute goal and doubling the lead to 2-0 just minutes into the second half.

"I thought we were playing quite well despite being down two goals," head coach Gerry D'Arcy said afterwards. "We never got discouraged. I hope we can get that kind of response if we're trailing again in a match, because it will make it very tough on future opponents. Our play is stepping up each time out."

Otterbein continued to battle and stepped up its play down the stretch, scoring twice in the final 12 minutes of regulation to force overtime. The Cards first got on the board when Reid Wolfe knocked in a cross from teammate Ross Pfeil, and drew even with under two minutes remaining in regulation as Wolfe returned the favor, sending a pass to Pfeil and watching him beat a drawn-out Hiram goalkeeper.

The Cardinals carried the momentum to overtime, scoring just 18 seconds into the extra session when freshman Sam Condon sent in a cross and saw leading-scorer Jared Pulliam end the match with his third goal of the season.

"We made the field a little smaller in the second half and it allowed our guys to win more of the second balls," D'Arcy explained. "I give all the credit to our kids because they simply did not want to lose. That last sequence in overtime was amazing and I think we left everyone there at Hiram speechless."

"It was awesome to get the game-winning goal in this situation," Pulliam added. "Going down 2-0 was obviously not how we wanted to start, but this group of guys is resilient and was determined to keep working. We have such a great mix of upperclassmen leadership and talented freshmen that is really meshing well. I'm excited to see what we can do this year."

Hiram finished with an 18-13 shot advantage for the match, but both teams attempted an identical 12 shots after intermission. Freshman Mack Stamper had four stops in the net for Otterbein.

Otterbein will play its third of what will eventually be seven-straight road matches Saturday afternoon, traveling to take on Oberlin College at 4 p.m.
