Box Score WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein University men's soccer squad absorbed an unfortunate result Sunday afternoon in non-conference action, suffering a 2-0 loss at the hands of visiting Wittenberg University.
Otterbein was dealt the loss despite controlling the majority of possession throughout and finishing with a commanding 19-5 shot advantage. The Cardinals, now 1-3 on the season, will hit the road for seven-straight road games and begin with a 7 p.m. date at Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday evening.
Wittenberg (2-1-1) got on the board early, getting a ninth-minute goal from Zack Moore off a cross from teammate Josh Marks.
The Cardinals held an 8-3 shot advantage at the half and held even more possession in the second half, roping off 11 shots compared to just two for the Tigers. Otterbein saw a few prime scoring opportunities, the first coming when senior Conor Holland maneuvered his way around the baseline and fed a ball back into the box, where an eventual shot from Jonathan Boardman was blocked by a defender.
Otterbein's best chance came in the 65
th minute when freshman Noah Coons found himself all alone charging in on the far post, but his point-blank shot sailed high. Josh Kellner saw his strong left-footed attempt saved at the 78:34 mark and a rocket from Jared Pulliam less than three minutes later deflected off the crossbar.
Wittenberg snuck in a second goal down the stretch when Josh McErlean converted a header off a corner kick that found its way through the legs of Cardinal goalkeeper Mack Stamper.
Otterbein finished with a 10-1 edge on corner kicks and forced Wittenberg keeper James Van Artsdalen to make nine critical saves throughout.
The match marked what could be the final outing for Otterbein men's soccer out at Clements Field, as the team will now call Memorial Stadium home after the venue underwent a $2.1 million renovation to install turf and a new track this summer. The Cards will play their remaining games there moving forward.
