Box Score Photo GalleryWESTERVILLE, Ohio - The Otterbein men's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw against cross-town rival Capital on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
The Cardinals, who now sit at 6-4-2 overall and 1-1-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play, tied the Crusaders for the fourth time in 13 regular season meetings since 2003.
Luis Rivas nearly put the Cards up in the early going, striking a well-placed ball just high of the Crusader goal in the 12th minute. Ten minutes later,
Ross Pfeil tallied his third goal of the year to put Otterbein up 1-0 off a cross into the box by
Reid Wolfe for his team-leading eighth assist of the season.
Six minutes passed before a ball in the box was served up by Capital, which unfortunately deflected off a Cardinal defender and into the net for an own goal. The two teams were tied at one goal apiece at the halftime break, with Otterbein holding a slim 6-5 advantage in shots. Both goalkeepers were kept busy in the opening period, saving seven shots combined.
Capital broke the 1-1 tie in the 60th minute, as Chewy Gordon posted the first goal of his collegiate career off a corner kick that was first deflected in the Cardinal box and then headed in by Gordon.
Less than five minutes later, Rivas knotted the score at two goals apiece with his team-best 10th goal of the year, coming off a textbook lead pass headed by
Erick Juarez-Manning. The assist was Juarez-Manning's fourth of the season.
Nate Norris nearly put the Cards on top near the end of regulation, striking a shot just wide of the Capital goal in the 82nd minute. Capital held a minor lead in shots at 16-15 after 90 minutes.Rivas came close to scoring again with just over five minutes remaining in double overtime, but to no avail, as his shot sailed just wide.
Otterbein held Capital in check over the extra 20 minutes of play, limiting its opposition to just three shots. The Crusaders led the shot margin 19-16. Cardinal goalkeeper
Mack Stamper saved nine shots in 110 minutes in goal, moving his record to 6-3-1 on the year.
Next up for the Cardinals is a trip to Ada, Ohio, on Oct. 14 for an OAC matchup against Ohio Northern. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
