Box Score WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein men's soccer team fell 2-0 to Marietta on Wednesday night in a pivotal Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) matchup at Memorial Stadium.
The Cardinals, who move to 8-6-3 overall and 3-3-2 against the OAC, now sit in sixth-place in the conference standings at two points ahead of seventh-place Mount Union. Otterbein coincidentally hosts Mount Union for Senior Night on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the team's regular-season finale, as a bid to the OAC Tournament will be on the line.
The Cardinals will need a win or tie to clinch a spot in the league's postseason tournament, which begins Nov. 3 and includes the top-six teams.
Otterbein dominated the entire game in total shots, posting an astounding 30 shots to which 11 came on goal. Marietta made the most of its shot opportunities throughout the game, tallying six of its 10 shots on goal.
The conference's top scorer Taylor Reasoner led the Pioneer scoring effort, notching a goal in each half to help his team edge the Cardinals. Reasoner's initial score came with just over six minutes left in the opening period, as a cross in the Cardinal box by Andy Rolfes found its way to the goal line and was tapped into the back of the net. The Cardinals led Marietta 16-5 in shots through the first 45 minutes, while also earning the lone corner kick of the opening half.
Reasoner put the Pioneers ahead 2-0 less than five minutes into the second half, stealing the ball away at midfield and finishing on the opposite end of the field for his league-leading 15th goal of the year. Otterbein managed to continue unloading shots by the handful down the stretch, but to no avail, as Pioneer goalkeeper Tyler Sholl was stellar between the posts, stopping 10 shots on several dynamic plays.
Cardinal goalkeeper
Mack Stamper finished the game with four saves in just his second loss in goal in the last six contests.
Luis Rivas and
Ross Pfeil tied for the team-lead in shots with five, as nine different players attempted at least two shots on the night.
